Deer Lake
Nestled in the foothills of the Long Range Mountains, Deer Lake intersects the Trans-Canada Highway and the Viking Trail. This is one of the region’s main service centres. The town’s history began with the hydroelectric and pulpwood industries. The Roy Whalen Regional Heritage Centre showcases tools, instruments, artifacts and antiques that illustrate the history of the town. The annual 10-day Strawberry Festival features the world’s longest strawberry shortcake and a wealth of local entertainment. The Newfoundland Insectarium, located in Reidville on Route 430, is one of only two insectariums in Eastern Canada. Cormack was founded as the Upper Humber Land Settlement for veterans from the Second World War and remains a farming town today.
