Howley Route 401
The bright yellow moose warning signs aren’t lying. Moose, the largest animals in western Newfoundland, can be deadly to motorists. Travelers should be careful when driving along the highways and roadways, especially at night when the long-legged animals become blinded by vehicle lights and may jump into the path of oncoming traffic. Ironically, moose are not native to the province. In 1904, four were taken off a train at Howley and introduced into the wild where their numbers grew quickly. In 2004, to celebrate the 100th anniversary, Howley unveiled a statue that celebrated the arrival of the moose to Newfoundland and Labrador.
