Daniel’s Harbour
Two Order of Canada recipients lived in this one small community – Nurse Myra Bennett and well-known fiddle player Rufus Guinchard. Known as Florence Nightingale of the North, Nurse Bennett was the only health care professional along 320 kilometres of rugged coastline. Her former home, Nurse Bennett Heritage House, has many of the tools used by Nurse Bennett to deliver 5,000 babies and extract 3,000 teeth during her career. The late Rufus Guinchard played the fiddle at parties from Sally’s Cove to Flowers Cove. His traditional Newfoundland music also entertained audiences in Europe and Japan, but none were more appreciative that the fans back home in Newfoundland.
