Great Harbour Deep
In 2002, Great Harbour Deep, a once-thriving fishing outport, became a ghost town. The 140 residents living in the isolated community had successfully petitioned the provincial government to help them leave. Great Harbour Deep was accessible by air or by sea. There was no hospital or doctor, no high school and few jobs since the cod moratorium. Today, some former residents return to their homes during the summer months, but the town as people knew it has ceased to exist.
