Petites
Soon after casting off in Rose Blanche you will pass the abandoned community of Petites. Local tour boat operators may be willing to motor into the harbour, giving you the opportunity to see the former town firsthand. Resettled in 2003 by the provincial government, and after residents requested the move, Petites was home to Bethany United Church, believed to be the oldest wooden church in Newfoundland and Labrador. Unlike the resettlement programs of the 1960s, when many families floated their homes from one community to the next, houses in Petites were left behind. Some are summer cottages; others are falling by the wayside, hidden in the wild grass that grows increasingly taller with each passing year.
